Description

Travelers arriving from selected countries for a short-term stay for tourism can Japan under special exceptional circumstances.

Visitor visas are suspended for most nationalities. Independent travelers can not get a tourist visa regardless of their country of origin. Foreign nationals planning to travel for short-term tourism trips may be authorized to enter as long as they have the ERFS form. The ERFS form should be obtained by a receiving organization located in Japan through an online application along with other visa application documents in response to the purpose of the visit.

More Details

This requirement doesn’t apply to the following travelers:

  • Holders of permanent or long-term residency permits (eijusha or teijusha) with a re-entry permit or re-entry confirmation letter;
  • Spouses or children of Japanese citizens or permanent residents with valid visas;
  • Direct relatives of Japanese nationals with valid visas;
  • Foreign nationals who are newly entering Japan for a short-term stay (less than 3 months) for purposes including business and employment with receiving organizations for supervision located in Japan;
  • Foreign nationals newly entering Japan for a long-term stay with receiving organizations for supervision located in Japan.

Fully vaccinated travelers having a booster dose don’t need a negative COVID-19 test result before traveling to Japan.

Travelers under the age of 18 also don’t need a negative COVID-19 test result before traveling to Japan if accompanied by a fully-vaccinated parent (who has received their booster shot) who supervises their activities, as those travelers will be considered as fully vaccinated.

The following vaccines are accepted in Japan: Comirnaty/Pfizer, Spikevax/Moderna, Nuvaxovid/Novavax, Vaxzevria/AstraZeneca, and JCOVDEN/Janssen, COVAXIN / Bharat Biotech, Covovax. Mix-and-match vaccines are also considered valid.

Vaccinated travelers without a booster dose must have a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test result before traveling to Japan. In that situation, please see the pre-departure COVID-19 testing requirements for unvaccinated travelers.

Travelers not entering Japan and transferring directly to a third country by transit are not required to submit documents and undergo COVID-19 PCR tests.

The following cases require entry into Japan and hence have to go through regular entry procedures:

  • Transferring between Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) and Narita International Airport;
  • Travelers with a connecting flight out of Narita International Airport the following day.
