Description

Travelers are allowed to transit through Germany to a non-Schengen area country as long as they stay in the international zone of the airport and have the necessary documentation for their final destination.

Travelers in transit are required to provide one of the following:

  • A negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test results from a test taken a maximum of 48 hours before arrival;
  • Proof of recovery from COVID-19;
  • Proof of vaccination.

Travelers are allowed to transit through Germany to a Schengen area country as long as they have the necessary proof required to enter their destination country. If the traveler must provide proof of reason to travel to the country of destination, travelers are recommended to present a document issued by the responsible authorities of the country of destination certifying that entry restrictions have been waived or that approval of entry has been granted.

Fully vaccinated travelers must have a vaccination certificate in paper or digital form. Proof of vaccination must be in German, English, French, Italian, or Spanish. Travelers must have received their last vaccine dose required no less than 14 days before the travel date. Vaccines accepted include Pfizer/Comirnaty, Johnson & Johnson/Janssen, Moderna, Nu­vax­ovid, and AstraZeneca.

Travelers that have received a combination of two different vaccines may still be considered fully vaccinated. Please check the link for more information on accepted vaccines and vaccine combinations.

Travelers who recovered from COVID-19 will be considered fully vaccinated after receiving a single dose of the above-accepted vaccines. Travelers must show proof that they were infected with COVID-19 prior to being vaccinated.

Travelers with access to the EU Digital Certificate may use it to present proof.

Travelers unable to present a valid certificate may be required to comply with rules for unvaccinated travelers.

This requirement does not apply to:

  • Travelers under the age of 12.

This requirement does not apply to:

  • Travelers who transited through a risk area without a stopover, or who are only passing through Germany;
  • Travelers who spent less than 24 hours in a risk area, or who are only entering Germany for up to 24 hours, for the purpose of border traffic;
  • Travelers who are being brought to Germany to be treated from COVID-19 infection in a hospital;
  • Travelers who are staying for less than 72 hours in Germany or in a risk area (travelers who are entering the country to visit first-degree relatives, a spouse or life partner who does not form part of the same household, or on account of shared custody or a right of access);
  • Cross-border commuters or border crossers and their work is urgently required;
  • Transport personnel (if staying in an area of variants of concern in the last 10 days before arrival, this exemption does not apply to stays of longer than 72 hours);
  • Member of an official delegation, who are returning to Germany via the government terminal at Berlin Brandenburg Airport or Cologne/Bonn Airport and have spent less than 72 hours in a risk area;
  • Police or customs officers returning from an operation abroad;
  • Member of the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) or foreign armed forces.

Due to a recent increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19, restrictions have been reintroduced by the government to curb further outbreaks.
