Description

Most Australian citizens and permanent residents are not allowed to travel internationally unless they have an exemption.

Temporary visa holders in Australia can depart Australia at any time, however, they will generally not be permitted to return.

If travelers want to leave Australia, they may apply online for an exemption to travel if they fall into one of the following categories:

  • Travel is as part of the response to the COVID-19 outbreak, including the provision of aid;
  • Travel is for the traveler's business or employer;
  • To receive urgent medical treatment that is not available in Australia;
  • Travel is for a compelling reason for three months or longer;
  • Travel is on compassionate or humanitarian grounds;
  • Travel is in the national interest.

Description

Travelers with Australian citizenship or permanent residents cannot leave Australia due to COVID-19 restrictions unless they qualify for an exemption. At least one of the following conditions should be met:

  • Traveling as part of the response to the COVID-19 outbreak;
  • Traveling for business/employer;
  • Traveling to receive urgent medical treatment that is not available in Australia;
  • Traveling with a compelling reason for 3 months or longer;
  • Traveling on compassionate or humanitarian grounds;
  • Traveling due to the national interest.
More Details

Travelers who have been in Australia for 14 days prior to departure are able to travel to New Zealand without applying for an outwards travel exemption.

This only applies when New Zealand is the destination of travel. Travelers who are transiting through New Zealand to another destination must apply for an outward travel exemption.
